Families plead for American hostages freedom

From 1967 to 1975, Freedom House Ambulance Service delivered emergency care to the Hill District, Oakland, and Downtown Pittsburgh, breaking medical ground by training its personnel to previously unheard-of standards. Its paramedics trained under Falk Fund president Phil Hallen and CPR innovator Dr. Peter Safar. The first medical director, Dr. Nancy Caroline, extended the training program and wrote the first textbook for paramedic care, still in use today. As Freedom House medical director, she often rode along with the paramedics and held weekly meetings to review and analyze calls. Her knowledge and training led her to publish emergency medical service manuals and textbooks used by paramedics worldwide. The 2023 edition of the Freedom in the World report, produced by US nonprofit Freedom House, was released today.

Freedom House advances the efforts of people around the world to live in freedom and exercise their rights. We do this, even in the most politically restrictive settings, by building long-term relationships with local activists as they promote open government, defend human rights, strengthen civil society, and facilitate the free flow of information and ideas. Freedom House also publishes the China Media Bulletin, a weekly analysis on press freedom in and related to the People's Republic of China. In 2023, Freedom House assisted more than 15,000 human rights activists, organizations, journalists, children and youth, and others at-risk more than 90 countries. Here's how we worked to expand and defend freedom across the world over the past year.

The paramedic training and ambulance design standards pioneered in the Freedom House Ambulance Service laid the foundation for standard emergency treatments. These are a few of the sobering conclusions in the 2021 Freedom in the World report, an annual quantitative measurement of the state of democracy globally. The latest findings, released today, show a nearly unprecedented decline in the health of democracy in countries around the world — one of the biggest “we’ve ever recorded,” according to Freedom House President Michael Abramowtiz. In 1997, Freedom House expanded its involvement in democracy support work in a wide series of regions, including Latin America, Eurasia, East Asia, the Middle East, and Africa.

Some of the global slide was driven by governmental overreach in response to the pandemic. In the US, former President Donald Trump questioned legitimate election results, leading to an attempted coup at the Capitol. And in India, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his allies continued a crackdown on critics. In 2005, the United States was one of the best-ranking countries in the world, with a score of 94. By 2020, the US had fallen to 83 — an 11-point drop that was, according to the Freedom House report, one of the 25 largest in the world. The US still qualifies for the “free” category, but it is no longer at the top of the class.

New data suggests a worldwide “democratic recession” deepened in 2020, with notable declines in the US and India. The United States is rated Free in Freedom on the Net, Freedom House's comprehensive study of internet freedom around the globe. Explore the latest edition of Freedom on the Net to learn how artificial intelligence is increasing the scale, speed, and efficiency of digital repression. The results from the three areas are combined into a total score for a country (from 0 for best to 100 for worst) and countries are rated as "Free" (0 to 30), "Partly Free" (31 to 60), or "Not Free" (61 to 100) based on the totals.

And some of the historically free countries that should be helping save democracy — the United States foremost among them — are actually part of the problem. Alarmed at the imposition of Soviet satellite regimes in Eastern Europe and beyond, Freedom House supported an American policy that was meant to counter Moscow’s expansionism and encourage an American foreign policy that placed the promotion of freedom at its core. Initially, the mission of Freedom House was to counter isolationism, a powerful force promoted by the America First Committee. At the time, ninety percent of American citizens were opposed to involvement in the European war, even as Nazi tanks rolled across the continent and concentration camps began to fill with people. The leaders of Freedom House argued that Hitler posed a grave threat to American security and values. From the beginning, Freedom House was notable for its bipartisan support.

Certain Republicans blamed hard-liners’ tactics for allowing Ukraine aid to be approved in a bipartisan way in the House over the weekend without border concessions attached. The Congressional Review Act is a process by which Congress can express disapproval of an executive branch decision. If Congress garners enough support in both the House and the Senate to approve the resolution, then they can send the resolution to rescind the rule to the President’s desk.

Freedom House has earned a reputation for taking on freedom causes in some of the most difficult environments, such as Venezuela, Cuba, Zimbabwe, Ethiopia, Egypt, Russia, Belarus, Ukraine, and Kazakhstan. In addition, Freedom House provides assistance to embattled human rights defenders, including many who face arrest, beatings, and death threats for their work. Since 1943, Freedom House has honored champions of democracy and human rights worldwide with our annual Freedom Award. Freedom on the Net is Freedom House’s annual survey and analysis of internet and digital media freedom around the world. Visit our Countries & Territories page to explore the numerical ratings and supporting country texts for the 29 countries and administrative areas assessed in the Nations in Transit 2024 report. On January 12, 2006, as part of a crackdown on unauthorized nongovernmental organizations, the Uzbek government ordered Freedom House to suspend operations in Uzbekistan.

It ended up being an amazing class and just an eye-opening experience to the world of organizing itself. Autocratic regimes, particularly powerful nations like China and Russia, are making things worse. These countries have built a network of sorts — what Anne Applebaum in the Atlantic dubbed “Autocracy Inc.” — that enables and supports further anti-democratic regression.

Resource and Information Centers managed by Freedom House in Tashkent, Namangan, and Samarkand offered access to materials and books on human rights, as well as technical equipment, such as computers, copiers and Internet access. The government warned that criminal proceedings could be brought against Uzbek staff members and visitors following recent amendments to the criminal code and Code on Administrative Liability of Uzbekistan. Other human rights groups have been similarly threatened and obliged to suspend operations. I wanted to really make something out of the African American studies major. Once I heard about the We Gon’ be Alright class and the Freedom Fellowship that it offered, I was immediately intrigued. I went to one of the info sessions beforehand and felt like I had to do this because I have a job opportunity lined up afterwards to lead me into my future career.

Despite increasingly repressive rule under the Chinese Communist Party (CCP), dissent in China occurs regularly and is geographically widespread. Freedom House's founders were prominent and influential leaders from the fields of business and labor, journalism, academia, and government. A central figure among its early leaders was First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt. Wendell Willkie, the Republican presidential nominee who ran against President Roosevelt in 1940, was also an ardent supporter and served as honorary co-chair along with Mrs. Roosevelt. Our yearly Freedom Award honors courageous individuals and innovative groups that have made significant contributions to the cause of human rights and democracy.

I say the biggest one for myself was the specific area that I was working in. About 9 or 10 freedom fellows get chosen and then they’re split up into different locations. My coworker, Greer Little and I, who’s amazing, were working in the Inland Empire.
